SATELLITE WORKSHOP

An all-day satellite workshop on clinical trial issues and harmonization among clinical trials will be held May 17, 2008 at the World War Museum auditorium. Pre-registration is essential and registration will be limited to 150 persons. The workshop is being supported by educational grants from two platinum donors of the ISSFAL meeting, Martek Biosciences, Inc. and Mead Johnson Nutritionals. A nominal fee of $25 will be charged. The workshop is being developed by the PUFA in Maternal and Infant/Child Health interest group within ISSFAL and organized by Robert Gibson and John Colombo.

Since the early days of PUFA research when trials were conducted pre-CONSORT guidelines to the large well controlled trials currently in progress there has been a sea-change in the way that randomised controlled trials are conducted. The realization that errors and bias can occur when to the subject numbers are small has resulted in the need for large trials (n which has meant new problems in management, particularly when there are several enrolments centers involved. In addition, new statistical techniques for evaluating growth and other non-linear events has given us remarkable new abilities to evaluate and interpret data. The maturation of PUFA clinical trial conduct means that nutritional trials are now the equal of drugs trials.

This workshop is designed for a broad range of nutritional scientists ranging from those just thinking about a new study to those with extensive experience in the area. Each topic will be introduced through a short presentation followed by an extensive Q & A session to provide maximal opportunity for discussion.
