ABOUT ISSFAL
The International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL) was established in March 1991 with the objective of increasing the understanding of the role of dietary fatty acids and lipids in health and disease through research and education. ISSFAL's members come from more than 40 countries and include scientists, health professionals, administrators and educators with an interest in the health effects of dietary fats.

ISSFAL's mission is to serve as an agent for communication among nutritionists, physiologists, pathologists, biochemists, cellular, molecular and structural biologists and practicing clinicians with interests in the biological effects of fatty acids and lipids in health and disease. Improved communication across these different branches of medical and biological sciences has stimulated new research and increased knowledge of lipid nutrition. ISSFAL has also taken a role in interpreting the new facts into sound nutritional advice for the public.

INVITATION
ISSFAL 2008 invites leading scientists in key areas of lipid and fatty acid research, especially those whose work can be linked to human health. ISSFAL 2008 expects to attract more than 500 delegates world-wide, from a wide range of disciplines linked to lipids and health. ISSFAL 2008 will continue the society's tradition of providing extensive support in the form of free registration and other competitive New awards for those persons whose submitted work is chosen for presentation.

KEY THEMES AND TOPICS
ISSFAL 2008 will provide an opportunity for learning cutting edge science related to the biology of fatty acids and lipids and their mediators; and for interaction among academic, government and industrial scientists from a number of disciplines, physicians and other health professionals. The plenary sessions, invited lectures and submitted abstracts will include topics selected from the following:

• Lipid networks and databases
• Membrane lipids and biophysics
• Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in cardiovascular health
• PUFA in maternal and infant/child health
• Dietary fats and gene interactions
• Eicosanoids, resolvins, docosatrienes and neuroprotectins
• PUFA in inflammation and immunity
• PUFA in brain development and aging
• PUFA and psychopathology
• Dietary fatty acids and chronic disease
• Dietary fatty acids and bioactive lipids in cancer
• Fatty acid biosynthesis, metabolism and catabolism
• Lipids in nutrition support
• Lipid transport
• CLA, trans and saturated fatty acids
• Novel sources of long chain fatty acids
• CYP-450 fatty acid metabolites

ABOUT KANSAS CITY
Established as a fur trading post in 1821, Kansas City played a major role in American history as a gateway for pioneers headed west along the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe Trails.

Today, the Kansas City metropolitan area is home to 2 million people, many of whom are employed in health care research and management. The Stowers Research Institute, Midwest Research Institute, and Kaufmann Foundation are all located in midtown Kansas City, Missouri. The metro area is home to two major state universities with active health sciences campuses and research faculties, the University of Kansas Medical Center, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Kansas City is the world headquarters of American Century, Hallmark Cards, H & R Block, Sprint, the Cerner Corporation and Garmin.

Kansas City is known as "The Heart of America" and is famous for its own brand of jazz and definitely some of the best barbeque you'll ever eat. Kansas City was developed at the dawn of the US "City Beautiful Movement", which began around 1890. The city planners designed a city with more boulevards than Paris and more fountains than any city except Rome. These amenities are cherished attributes of the city today. When you visit Kansas City for the first time, be ready to be surprised by the culture, sports, and just plain fun that makes Kansas City a true gem of the Midwest United States.

Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is located north of downtown and is approximately 20 minutes from the Hyatt Crown Center. Kansas City International Airport is served by all major airlines, and shuttles and taxis are available around the clock.
